ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, activity levels and impulse control. Symptoms usually fall into two groups.
Inattention
- Making careless mistakes or overlooking details
- Difficulty keeping focus during tasks, conversations or reading
- Seeming not to listen when spoken to directly
- Poor organisation and time management
- Avoiding tasks that need sustained mental effort
- Frequently losing things and being forgetful
Hyperactivity and impulsivity
- Fidgeting or feeling restless
- Difficulty staying seated or relaxing
- Talking excessively or interrupting others
- Difficulty waiting
- Acting without thinking through consequences
When to seek an assessment
Everyone experiences some of these at times. An assessment is worth considering when symptoms have been present since childhood, occur across different settings such as home and work, and have a significant impact on your life. Only a qualified clinician can diagnose ADHD.
