Autism is a lifelong developmental difference in how people communicate, interact and experience the world. Every autistic person is different, but signs usually relate to two main areas.
Social communication and interaction
- Difficulty understanding unspoken social rules
- Finding it hard to read facial expressions, tone or body language
- Taking language literally
- Finding group conversation or small talk difficult
Restricted and repetitive patterns
- Strong need for routine and predictability
- Deep, focused interests
- Repetitive movements (stimming)
- Differences in sensory sensitivity
When to seek an assessment
If these differences have been present since childhood and affect daily life, an assessment may help. Only a qualified clinician can diagnose autism.
