ADHD in women and girls is frequently missed. Symptoms can be less outwardly hyperactive and more internal: a racing mind, chronic overwhelm, and exhausting effort to keep up. Many women are first treated for anxiety or depression before ADHD is considered.
Why ADHD is often overlooked in women
- Inattentive symptoms are less noticeable than disruptive behaviour
- Many women develop coping strategies that hide their difficulties
- Symptoms can change with hormonal shifts, including puberty, pregnancy and perimenopause
- Research and diagnostic criteria were historically based largely on boys
