In children, ADHD and autism can sometimes produce overlapping or interacting difficulties. A child may struggle with attention and impulse control while also experiencing sensory differences, social-communication differences or a strong need for predictability.
A combined assessment can be appropriate where there is meaningful evidence pointing toward both conditions. It avoids forcing a complex presentation into a single explanation before the relevant evidence has been considered.
The pathway may draw on parent/carer developmental history, education information, questionnaires, clinical assessment and recognised assessment methods. The exact components depend on the child’s age, presentation and clinical needs.
Possible outcomes include ADHD, autism, both conditions, or neither. The assessment is not designed to guarantee a diagnosis; it is designed to reach the most appropriate clinical conclusion.
Where one or both conditions are identified, recommendations may cover home routines, communication, sensory needs, emotional regulation, education and reasonable adjustments. Where criteria are not met, the clinician can explain the findings and recommend next steps where appropriate.
