When traits are less obvious, recognition can come later.
ADHD and autism have historically been missed in some women and girls, particularly when traits are less externally disruptive or when a person has learned to compensate.
A girl with ADHD may be more noticeably inattentive, dreamy, overwhelmed or disorganised than hyperactive. An autistic girl or woman may consciously imitate social behaviour, rehearse conversations or suppress visible signs of discomfort. These patterns are sometimes described as masking or camouflaging.
Academic achievement does not rule out ADHD or autism. Some people maintain strong performance through intense effort, perfectionism, rigid systems or significant stress.
Reasons women and girls may seek assessment include chronic overwhelm, difficulty maintaining routines, sensory sensitivities, social exhaustion, inconsistent attention, emotional dysregulation or a longstanding feeling of being different despite appearing capable to others.
Assessment still requires evidence against the relevant diagnostic criteria; it should not assume a diagnosis simply because a person identifies with online descriptions.
