Both NHS and private assessments should follow the same NICE guidance and be carried out by qualified clinicians. The main differences are cost, waiting time and choice.
NHS assessment
- Free at the point of use
- Often long waiting lists
- Limited choice of clinician and appointment time
Private assessment
- Paid for by you or your insurer
- Usually much shorter waiting times
- More choice over appointment times and format, including online
Things to check with any provider
- Are the clinicians suitably qualified and registered?
- Is the provider regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)?
- Does the assessment follow NICE guidance?
- Will your GP accept the diagnosis and any shared care request?
