Right to Choose

Right to Choose is an NHS scheme in England. If your GP agrees you need an ADHD or autism assessment, you can ask to be referred to a provider of your choice, as long as that provider holds an NHS contract for the service. The assessment is then funded by the NHS.

101 Clinic is a private provider. You book with us directly and pay us for your assessment. You do not need a GP referral, and we are not part of the NHS Right to Choose scheme.

How Right to Choose works

1. Book an appointment with your GP and explain your difficulties.
2. Ask to be referred for an assessment under Right to Choose, to a provider you have chosen.
3. Your GP checks you are eligible and sends the referral.
4. The provider contacts you to arrange your assessment.

Things to know

• Right to Choose applies in England only.
• Your GP needs to agree that a referral is appropriate.
• There are some exceptions, for example for people already receiving care for the same condition from NHS mental health services.
• Waiting times vary between providers and can still be long.

Right to Choose or private?

Both routes should give you a thorough assessment in line with NICE guidance. The main differences are:

• Right to Choose: funded by the NHS, needs a GP referral, and waiting times depend on the provider.
• Private with 101 Clinic: you pay for your assessment, there is no GP referral needed, and you can usually be seen much sooner, in person in Edgware or online.

If you would rather not wait, or your GP is unable to refer you, a private assessment may be the quicker route to an answer.
