A shared care agreement is an arrangement where a specialist starts ADHD medication and your GP then takes over ongoing prescribing, usually once your dose is stable. This can reduce the cost of private prescriptions.
How shared care works
- A specialist diagnoses ADHD and starts medication
- Your dose is adjusted and monitored until stable (titration)
- The specialist writes to your GP to request shared care
- If your GP agrees, they prescribe on the NHS while the specialist provides guidance and reviews
Important to know
Shared care is at your GP’s discretion. Some GP practices or local NHS areas do not accept shared care from private providers. We recommend asking your GP practice about their policy before you start treatment.
